Hi! My name is Catelyn Perkins and I am so excited that you’re here. I am a painter and fiber artist currently living in the beautiful city of Savannah, GA. I moved here to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design from which I graduated in June of 2022 with my BFA in Painting and minor in Fibers.

 

Throughout my college experience, as I learned what art really was and how to create it, I made works that reflect the comforts and conflicts of living in and leaving my hometown as well as my travels across the United States. Constantly, I find myself searching for the feelings of what once was, but there is no way to fully re-live a moment. The scenery, the people, the familiarity of  sounds, smells, colors, and songs that created memories out of those mere moments. 

 

Using the mediums of sketching, painting, and fibers my work captures flora, fauna, landscapes and abstractions in pursuit of nostalgia. As I have come to realize so much of who I am, my art has become about self discovery and ties closely to my memories of home. In the midst of chaos and uncertainty, art became an escape from the real world, giving a sense of peace similar to that of the moments sitting in the fields and in the quiet moments by fences admiring my neighbors’ cows. Creating has been essential in the process of exploring who I am, accepting the changes of life, and abandoning the fear of leaving or losing who I once was. All of the moments I have been afraid will get lost as they slip through my fingers, have been and continue to be turned into physical works taking up real space. Although I cannot physically relive these moments, my work attempts to catch glimpses of what life has been and the feelings these moments have entailed.

 

With all of this said, I want to leave you with the main reason I create. I believe we are made in the image of God, creator of the universe, and I believe that the image of God isn’t limited to our physical appearance. We are made to create just as He does. Art is all around us - in the sky, the trees, the animals, and in every human being’s beautiful embodied self. So for me, to create and make things beautiful is what the Lord Jesus has made me to do as I seek to reflect Him and honor Him in my practice.
